The Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust has just published its report, The Rules of the Game, on terrorism, community and human rights. It draws upon a diverse range of expertise and interviews to assess the terrorist threat in the UK, the effect on Muslim communities, the experience of young Muslims and how they view their own identities.
Fifty-four per cent of Muslims in the UK are under the age of 25 and that number is expected to increase. To me, Muslims in that age bracket have the most complicated and multi-faceted identities of any minority group in British society - they are at a spaghetti junction of cultures, faiths, ethnic, generational and gender relation conflicts. Added to that cocktail is the global political events of recent years.
