Comments such as: "Unless you are really talented, motivated or plain lucky you don't stand a chance with an arts degree", made in response to the survey, indicate some of the sentiments felt by people throughout the country. But what is the cause for this apathy and confusion?

First, the economic and social reasons for expanding higher education have not been communicated clearly, or sufficiently, to young people.

And second, the higher education sector has not provided a seamless transition into the world of work for graduates. It does equip arts students with some of the skills required for entering the workplace but students need to know how to transfer the skills they are learning.
