Take our lesbian and gay youth group. Numbers were slipping and an awareness-raising push was needed to get our name and number out there. Important community information, but hardly what anyone would describe as breaking news.
What we needed was something different. A new angle to get the group noticed. And we didn't have to look far for inspiration. Nominations for the annual Academy Awards had just been announced and the gay love story Brokeback Mountain was everywhere, having just scooped four Golden Globes, a Bafta for best film and been nominated for an Oscar or two.
