- It's possibly the greatest voting scandal since the Florida election recount of 2000. Blue Peter is mired in scandal yet again with the revelation that staff ignored the result of an online poll to name a new kitten.
"The BBC's reputation for honesty and integrity has hit a new low," fumed London's Evening Standard, which goes on to quote Liberal Democrat culture spokesman Don Foster. "Even the youngest viewers must now begin to doubt the honesty and integrity of the BBC," he declares.
BBC children's programme Newsround broke the news more gently to website readers: "There's trouble at Blue Peter after the show asked you to name a pet - and then ignored the result of your vote," it says. The story continues: "The man in charge of the BBC, Richard Deverell, told Newsround: 'I am very sorry. It is a bad mistake.'" Surely there's a lesson here for all those trying to "engage", "consult with" or "involve" children and young people.
