- BBC Newsround's website asked young readers whether their playgrounds had been vandalised in light of the ghastly case of a six-year-old boy whose thumb was torn off when he slid down a damaged slide. The response was depressing. "If you find a playground without vandalism in our area it must have just opened," wrote 12-year-old Rhiannon from Newport. Gareth, 10, from Exeter was so fed up he was "glad the summer holidays are nearly over". "There is a really good assault course near me and it's covered in gum, spit and lazy people sit in the middle of it," he complained.
