- The Local Government Association's First magazine has been looking at how councils are working hard to help people suffering from the effects of the economic downturn. In among calm and reassuring messages concerning Icelandic banks, there was news of how one local authority is trying to encourage prudent financial habits in young consumers.
North Tyneside's money management conference drew more than 200 15-to 16-year-olds to find out "how to address debt problems before they lead to repossession, bankruptcy and visits from bailiffs".
Labour councillor Norma Redfearn, North Tyneside's lead member for children and young people, said debt could have long-term consequences for housing, health and job prospects. Perhaps the council should run a similar conference for all the local authorities that have been hit by the banking crisis?
