- Don't mess with your food. Don't talk with your mouth full. And never sing with your mouth full. You might choke. You could have someone's eye out. Okay, that last one is stretching it a bit. But the rest is good advice.

Which is why an enormous number of viewers complained when they saw a television advert for KFC that showed grown-ups singing and talking while eating. The Advertising Standards Authority reported 1,671 complaints.

They said the advertisement encouraged bad manners, making it appear funny to speak or sing with a mouth full of food. Many of the viewers said they were trying to teach their children good table manners and the commercial had undermined their efforts. Some 41 said their children had copied it.

Just to give an idea of how many complaints that was, only one broadcast advert received more complaints in the whole of last year. A typical number of complaints for an advert exposing children to bad manners is a few dozen. For instance, an advert that showed a man trying to trap a budgie between two slices of bread received 79 complaints. Singing with your mouth full is clearly a hot potato.
