StreamShield Networks is an internet filtering company. It hired the pollsters Mori to research public views on whether the government and internet service providers are doing enough to combat child pornography.

Using random digit dialling, Mori called up 1,005 adults, aged 16 and over. They were asked, presumably after the researcher had taken a deep breath: "If internet service providers were to track the visits made to child abuse and paedophilic internet web sites, would you support or oppose their helping the police to identify those visiting such sites?"

The company's PR company was pleased to report that 93 per cent of respondents said they would strongly support or tend to support that action. An amazing result.

Sadly for them, revealing a powerful and previously unknown strength of feeling among the public didn't get them a lot of headlines. A mention in the Financial Times, and one in the computer press, was their lot.
