Children's home operator Green Corns typically places a single child with two adult carers in an ordinary house. It sought a high court ruling to protect their privacy after the Express & Star identified four of its care homes.
Green Corns argued that printing the addresses increased the risk to the children in its care. It pointed out that, after the newspaper's coverage, two of its houses suffered damage and were broken into. On one occasion a 15-year-old and his carers had to be removed by the police for their own safety as demonstrators protested outside.
The newspaper argued that communities have the right to know where such homes are. So did Ian Austin, newly elected MP for Dudley North. In his Commons maiden speech he said the company had behaved "disgracefully" in seeking an injunction preventing identification of the homes.
