Despite Supernanny's best efforts to ensure a spell on the naughty step is the worst punishment meted out to misbehaving children, some parents are still "proud to smack".

The Daily Mail carried a two-page article flagging up a TV show on thesubject, complete with smiling pictures. It's easy to despair when youread the views of Nichola and Paul Cooksley who believe: "If some of theanti-social behaviour order generation had been smacked, our countrymight not be in the state it is today."

At first they felt guilty about smacking their four-year-old son butthen they realised it "worked". "We are only forced to smack him aboutonce or twice a month. But it used to be once a fortnight, which showsit is working," they add. However, another couple who appeared in theshow had a bit of a rethink after seeing their three-year-old's face oncamera "contorted and crying after he was smacked".
