No surprises about which aspect of the Families, Children and Child Care study - famously co-directed by Penelope Leach - attracted most publicity. It was as if the news and headline writers collectively sucked pencils, scratched their heads, and with paranormal synchronicity thought - Got it! We'll make working mothers feel bad.

And so they did.

"Childcare 'no substitute for mum'," said the Daily Mail. "Toddlerslooked after by mothers 'develop better"," was The Independent's take.The Times went with, "Mother's care is best for first three years". Allwere followed by potted accounts of the study revealing that childrencared for by anyone other than their mothers tended to show higherlevels of aggression or otherwise scored worse on developmental tests.Fathers were scarcely mentioned.

This didn't just make working mothers feel bad. It made them angry. Oneemail to a newspaper's web site from a working single mother wasblunt.

"No, it's not ideal, but then neither is having your husband dropdead."
