How do you go about this? I usually go and chat with the visiting families and meet young people who have been referred by the prison drugs team based in Feltham. I give them the information they need and help them explore the options they have. I also refer people to other services such as family support groups and statutory services.

What is the best thing about your job? Helping someone get a greater understanding of how they are coping. It's not about rescue, but about empowerment so they can make informed choices themselves.

What are the downsides? Trying to engage them can be hard at first, as they naturally don't want to divulge a lot of personal information to a stranger. There is also a lack of funding. The job should be expanded to a full-time role ideally, as there is a really big need for them to have someone to talk things over with.
