Back Page: And this is what I do - Richard Whitehouse, developmenttutor, YMCA National Centre

What are the young people you work with like? Most are aged between 16 and 25. The young people come to us through youth clubs, Connexions, YMCA hostels and pupil referral units. They could be school-leavers who don't know what to do next, homeless, living with drug addiction, ex-offenders or simply have been in trouble in school. Many have low self-esteem or learning difficulties.

What results do you see from your work? As I only work with the young people for a week at a time, I rarely get to see the long-term effects of my work.

But, in the short term, I see young people developing confidence, overcoming fears and learning what they are capable of achieving. In a group, the young people learn to work as a team, get along with and look after each other, understand differences and how to use those differences effectively.
