Back Page: And this is what I do - Jo-Anne Seddon, school arson andyouth liaison officer, Merseyside

How did you get into this? As a youth worker for youth offending services, I took three girls to the Fire Service's Beacon Programme, aimed at 11- to 16-year-olds. I saw how it was helping to reduce the number of pupils being excluded by involving them and building self-esteem. Now Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service has achieved Beacon status. My background with The Prince's Trust has helped in my role. I worked with young people marginalised through a criminal conviction or lack of qualifications, and helped them become economically independent.

Why should fire services work with young people? Youth engagement helps to break down barriers between young people and firefighters. We want to help young people become better citizens in their community and show them the Fire Service is not just here to put fires out.
