Back Page: And this is what I do

What does your work involve? I work for the company that runs the Tyne and Wear Metro system. Part of my work involves visiting schools and talking to young people about safety. We tailor sessions to school needs; for example, a school may be near a Metro station and have issues with antisocial behaviour. We also do a lot of educational work with other agencies in a centre in Newcastle called Safety Works!, which has a mock-up of a Metro station and tracks, so we can put people in the centre of scenarios.

What role do you play in tackling railway crime? I work with youth offending teams across Tyne and Wear. If a young person has offended on the Metro system, myself and another member of staff will join a panel meeting and act as corporate victims. We've also set up a reparation scheme, where young people do four to six hours of reparation, such as washing maintenance vans. I also talk to the young people about the cost of railway crime, the impression it gives and how much they've put themselves in danger. Offences include trespassing and vandalism.
