What tactics do you use to persuade them? I ask them if volunteering is something they've considered and what they think about it. A lot of them say it sounds boring or they don't want to work with old people, or it will cost them a lot of money. I approach the job by challenging these perceptions; getting them to explain why they think volunteering is rubbish. With each point they make, I tell them they're wrong, drawing on my own experience.
Does it work? I find that once I've got rid of their objections, they have to agree with me. Over the two and a half years that I've been in the job, I've probably got at least 1,000 young people into volunteering.
