Sainsbury was speaking at the launch last week of Asylum Voices, a report published by Churches Together in Britain and Ireland that emphasises the need for a return to "traditional British values of justice and compassion".
The bishop was "dismayed" by the MORI poll for Refugee Week 2003 that last week revealed young people were intolerant about refugees and asylum seekers (YPN, 18-24 June, p5).
"The issue of asylum seekers and refugees in this country is a very high priority, and the youth service is well placed to respond, given its concern for disadvantaged and excluded young people," said Sainsbury, who attended a vigil on 19 June outside the Home Office to highlight the problems that are faced by young asylum seekers. "The youth service supports some wonderful projects working with young refugees and asylum seekers."
