Q: I run training for a wide range of professionals on issues including teenage pregnancy and child sexual exploitation. But I'm struggling to cope with the frequency that participants disclose their own experiences, often getting upset. What should I do?
Jeanie Lynch: Any training that deals with topics that can trigger unhappy memories should always be delivered sensitively and with an early health warning.
Course information should be clear about the aims and outcomes of the training and participants told in advance about the content. When delivering the training itself, it is vital you create a safe environment, where participants can learn while potentially stretching their own boundaries. A robust working agreement along with input on how to manage personal feelings in a professional learning environment will set the scene for participants.
