Our panel offers advice on guardianship orders, dealing with bereavement, restructures at work and complaints about youth activities.

Q: The government's latest review of special guardianship orders (SGOs) seems more positive than previous criticism of local authority work in this area. How do we make the most of this?

Peter Lewis: There was a point when it seemed the government felt adoption was the only way forward. However, for some children, SGOs are the right option. But they have to be done well.

When SGOs were first introduced, they tended to mark the end of local authority involvement in a child's life. That has had to change, since both child and carers need ongoing support including financial support.

Make sure you understand and budget for the financial implications of SGOs, both when it comes to staffing to support them and direct financial support for families.
