Question: One of my youth work colleagues has developed a strong friendship with a young man who came to us a shy, inarticulate teenager with low self-esteem. My colleague has done a great job in raising his confidence and helping him develop new skills. But they have been spending time together in the evening. Should I mention this to anyone?

Tracie Trimmer-Platman: The job title youth worker spells it out - the role is to work with young people and under no circumstances should this extend into the personal or social life of either the worker or young person. When working with young people, adults must keep a respectful and appropriate distance.
