Ask the Expert: Improving care leavers' skills

1 min read Social Care Leaving care

Given the difficulties in the jobs market, how can we secure the right support and experience for care leavers?

Young people in care often miss out on the extended family networks that can open up chances for work experience or part-time jobs.

You should work with elected members to develop a relationship with the local chamber of commerce. Urge them to set up a scheme where they agree to give work experience to a number of young people in care. This needs to start from the age of 13 or 14, not just before they leave care.

Encourage the local authority and the health service to offer practical work experience. Then get references and feedback for the young people.
