Ask the Expert: Consultation participation

1 min read Early Years Management

We have launched a public consultation on the restructure of our children’s centres, but despite our best efforts, we have had few responses from families, but plenty from staff. How can we encourage parents to contribute?

Some techniques to consider include leafleting houses in the surrounding area; sending letters home with children from nearby schools; ensuring local councillors are involved and use their networks; contacting the faith communities; making use of local media; and using GP surgeries, libraries and shopping centres to give out information.

Once the information has gone out, run some public and local residents’ meetings.

It is important to keep a record of the ways you have sought input and report this to the council so there is a formal record of the work in the event of any challenge to the decisions taken. Getting the views of service users is worthwhile, but seldom easy, but it is our job to be positive and proactive.
