The funding, announced last week, comes from the Department for Education and Skills and follows negotiations between the council and the Association of Learning Providers (ALP), which has warned that the Government risks missing its target of getting 175,000 young people on Apprenticeships by July (YPN, 2-8 March, p4).
Stephen Gardner, director of work-based learning at the council, said: "Apprenticeship providers have been reporting waiting lists and the additional funds will ensure that every employer who wishes to recruit an apprentice can do so."
The council attributes the funding shortfall to the success of a marketing campaign to employers, as well as the efforts of providers to improve retention.
