Apprenticeships: Association expresses anger at targeting of college students

The Association of Learning Providers has raised concerns that the practice undermines the quality of Apprenticeships and its own efforts to increase the proportion of young people completing the programmes.

A spokesman for the association said that moving young people on to Apprenticeships who were not ready for or suited to the course would lead to a higher failure rate. "Such a development would reverse the growing confidence in Apprenticeships being expressed across society," he said.

Stephen Gardner, director of work-based learning at the Learning and Skills Council, defended the measure, arguing that the college learners being targeted were already doing elements of Apprenticeships, including national qualifications such as NVQs.
