Recruitment cutbacks by the association's members and an extra 38m in funding from the LSC have reduced the estimated 100m funding shortfall, but means the council's target of getting 175,000 new apprentices by next month could be missed.
The association is still waiting to hear how much money will be made available for Apprenticeship programmes. Lawyers representing the association wrote to the LSC last month, arguing that a recent decision to fund apprentices at only half the nationally agreed rate made targets impossible to achieve (YPN, 11-17 May, p2). The council has now responded to the letter and the association is considering its response.
