The membership body for charities concerned about young offenders in the youth justice system plans to raise awareness of potential children's rights abuses in the Government's antisocial behaviour drive.
The Standing Committee for Youth Justice is concerned that the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child has passed up its five-yearly opportunity to assess children's rights in the UK. The UN last published a report on children's rights in the UK in 2002, and is not now due to repeat its assessment until 2009.
Pam Hibbert, deputy chair of the association and principal policy officer at Barnardo's, said: "We are looking for a way to raise the issue with the UN committee before 2009."
