Angling: Hooked on fishing

6 mins read
Anglers throughout the UK celebrated National Fishing Week last week. Tim Burke looks at the educational and social benefits young people can gain from the sport.

"I thought it extremely unimaginative. No-one seemed to give a second thought to the idea of asking young people what they wanted."

Watson's response was to develop a project connected with his own passion for angling. When he asked young people they were very interested - and five years later the idea has spawned the Get Hooked on Fishing trust, which backs nine projects around the country and is part of a burgeoning movement to highlight the benefits of fishing.

Get Hooked on Fishing provides young people with access to tackle and the support of qualified fishing coaches. It has worked with 660 young people in Durham alone this year, three-quarters of whom are identified as at risk of offending. None did offend, and three-quarters of the 660 have shown improved attendance at school.
