Work experience boosts children's confidence and gives them ideas for future careers. But allowing them to direct flights at one of the world's busiest airports is perhaps a step too far.
"An air traffic controller at New York's John F Kennedy airport has been suspended after allowing one young child to clear planes for departure and another to speak to pilots," reported The Daily Telegraph.
The incident was captured on tape. "In the recording a child, who sounds seven or eight years old, can be heard saying to a pilot: 'Jet Blue 171, cleared for takeoff'," said the paper. "A man is then heard telling the plane: 'Here's what you get, guys, when the kids are out of school'. On the tape, the pilot chuckled and said: 'Wish I could bring my kids to work'."
