Analysis: Practice - Will a new youth award inspire fresh arttalent?

Getting a break-dancing qualification may seem like a joke to some, but don't tell that to Arts Council England, whose new Arts Award will allow young people to do just that.

The national award scheme, to be launched on 1 October, will enable young people aged 11 to 25 to achieve an accredited qualification in an arts activity of their choice, from breakdancing and opera to being in a rock band (YPN, 14-20 September, p5).

Tactically sound

Diane Walton, head of the award, says: "This will be one of the key planks of our national arts strategy for young people. We hope it will open up opportunities for the Arts Council to work with the youth work sector."
