Analysis: Practice - Volunteering - Accreditation programme gets astamp of approval

The Youth Achievement Award is to become the Government-endorsed accreditation scheme for young volunteers, as recommended in the Russell Commission's report on youth volunteering.

The Home Office believes the UK Youth-devised award provides a "flexible and youth-led" model for recognising the work of young volunteers, regardless of what form their voluntary work takes.

Government plans

Speaking at a Youth Achievement Award conference in Birmingham last week, Richard Harries, head of the Volunteering and Charitable Giving Unit in the Home Office's Active Communities Directorate, said the award is the "beating heart" of the Government's plans for youth volunteering. The Government is putting together an implementation body to turn the Russell Commission's vision into reality, and establishing accreditation for young volunteers is an important part of that body's work, explains Harries.
