In the Manifesto for Young People launched by Cornwall Youth Forum last week, young people demanded action to promote Cornish language and culture. Cornwall County Council has recognised the need to place young people at the heart of its plans to revive Cornish, and will be appointing a development officer by September to steer efforts to build an accessible Cornish learning programme from pre-school upwards.
Linguistic survival
Ultimately, the survival of languages such as Cornish and Manx, the native language of the Isle of Man, depends on encouraging their use outside school. But until linguistically equipped youth workers are in place for such a task, youth services can look north for inspiration.
