Amid the flurry of change involved in integrating children and young people's services, one man, at least, is quite pleased with the way things are turning out.

"In 35 years in the sector, I've never been as influential in the local authority as I am now," says Ivan York, head of Kirklees Young People's Services. "We punch way above our weight for the size of the service, given that we're a 4m operation. Our views are sought, our evaluation is sought, at all sorts of levels."

In other areas of the country, however, the question of who will stand up for youth work within integrated services is becoming less clear, because of the elimination of the borough- or county-wide principal youth officer post.
