Analysis: Policy - Youth services

4 mins read

In December last year, the Government's publication of Support for parents: the best start for children probably escaped much of the youth sector's notice.

But it might be worth a look now. The document, which was jointly published by the Treasury and the Department for Education and Skills (DfES), sets out the principles that are now driving the Government's policy review on children and young people's services, launched earlier this month (YPN, 12-18 July, p2).

In determining what approaches should be used to meet children and young people's needs over the next 10 years and how much money services need in the run-up to next year's spending review, the Government will spend the next few months asking how services can build on the three principles identified in the report. These are: helping parents meet their responsibilities; striking the right balance between universal and targeted support to improve social mobility; and preventing poor outcomes.
