Launches of interim findings from government reviews rarely attract senior politicians. But a youth review, out last week, attracted no less than four, including Prime Minister-in-waiting Chancellor Gordon Brown (YPN, 10-16 January, p3).
The Policy review of children and young people is getting such attention because it is one of a series of themed reviews that will influence the Comprehensive Spending Review this summer. This will outline government spending for the next decade, setting departmental budgets from 2008-09 through to 2010-11, as well as long-term priorities for investment. The review could spell out the future of youth work and youth services for the next 10 years.
