Analysis: Information sharing - Index plans get a warm welcome

The Department for Education and Skills' plans for a comprehensive database that will be operational by the end of 2008 have been welcomed by professionals working in children's services despite concerns mainly from outside the sector. David Singleton reports.

It's been a long time coming but the Government has finally confirmedthat it will press ahead with plans for a national information sharingindex.

Almost a year after it finished consulting on the issue, the Departmentfor Education and Skills has said it wants a comprehensive electronicdatabase up and running in less than three years.

In a letter sent to all children's services directors, children'sminister Beverley Hughes states: "Our aim is to ensure that children'sservices in all local areas have access by the end of 2008 to anoperational index containing basic details for all children aged zero to18 in their area and contact details for the services they arereceiving."
