Analysis: Information sharing - A tool for preventative services

As the sector debates the measures contained in the Children Bill, new technology is already available to track vulnerable children and improve information sharing between agencies. But do the benefits outweigh the costs? John Plummer reports.

The launch of Ryogens (News, 14-20 April) comes just as local authorities are getting to grips with the implications of the Children Bill on the exchange of data, and as the of Identification, Referral and Tracking (now called Information Sharing and Assessment) systems' trailblazers roll out their pilot projects.

Ryogens, which stands for Reducing Youth Offending Generic National Solution, was originally intended as a tool to combat crime by young people. But those involved in its pilot stage say it can be used for child protection work too. And, importantly, it offers a way to share information now, rather than wait months for the national rollout of technology.
