AFTER-SCHOOL CLUBS: Kids' Clubs Network gets a new identity

1 min read

In a new report, Creating opportunities, building futures, the youth charity called on the Government to increase funding from 3.5bn to 7bn and to modernise the structure of youth work professions.

The charity, which is developing Make Space after-school clubs across the country, said the extra funding was needed to provide 10,000 centres based in or close to schools. These centres would also provide specialist support for young people with input from health and social services professionals.

The report also recommends that schools should be open to young people during holidays.

Anne Longfield, chief executive of 4Children, said: "The Government is already looking actively at extending schools. These suggestions chime with the aspirations of the green paper Every Child Matters." Longfield said that the Government needed to act boldly to ensure long-term results. "In the light of the Government's targets on eradicating child poverty and allowing parents to work, this is the scale of investment that is needed," she added.
