Schools need more support to help develop young people's decision-making skills, according to a report published last week by the Department for Education and Skills.
How Do Young People Make Choices at 15 and 16?, a study carried out by the National Foundation for Educational Research, says local authorities and Connexions should find ways to help schools develop young people's decision-making skills.
The study found a link between schools with effective career guidance and young people making rational decisions with less reliance on family and friends.
Researchers found varying quality of guidance in schools, casting doubt over whether schools will meet quality standards to be finalised next year.
