
In April last year responsibility for Connexions passed to local authorities. A new report from the CfBT Education Trust, published this week, is the first major insight into how the service has fared since. And the authors don't hide their concerns about the splintering and fragmentation of career and guidance services for young people.
Tony McAleavy, director of education at the CfBT Education Trust, says the report shows there is now a "significant degree of inconsistency and confusion" in the provision of careers guidance. Some local authorities are enhancing targeted support to vulnerable young people while others are going in the other direction and increasing the universal offer. "In the absence of a national blueprint, councils are responding to their new responsibility in extremely varied ways. "
