Connexions needs a radical rethink. That was the conclusion of the former Health Secretary Alan Milburn last week.
Milburn has been chairing a cross-party panel set up by Prime Minister Gordon Brown to examine the accessibility of professions such as law and medicine to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. His Unleashing Aspiration report is scathing about the current information, advice and guidance (IAG) system, arguing that it does little to improve social mobility.
"We have barely heard a good word about the careers work of the current Connexions service," says the report. "We can only conclude that its focus on the minority of young people is distracting it from offering proper careers advice and guidance to the majority of young people. The service is simply not good enough and requires a radical rethink."
