Action for Children Seagulls Children's Centre, Great Yarmouth

1 min read Early Years
What happens at Seagulls? The centre runs Seb's Group, which aims to support pre-school children with social, emotional and behavioural (SEB) difficulties. It helps to improve their social skills and deal with inappropriate behaviour. Parents, health visitors and early years settings make referrals when they see emerging difficulties and the children go to Seb's Group twice a week, for between three months and a year.

How did it start? Seb's Group began as a nurture group for children requiring extra support before moving to primary school and has grown from there.

How does it work? The group replicates a pre-school session but with a higher ratio of adults to children (one for every two). There are usually eight children in the group at any time. Seb's Group is all about building up self-esteem and self-recognition. This is done through praise, rewards and building consistent boundaries. The children are given a strict routine, which gives them security. There is also a puppet called Seb, who acts as a role model for the children.
