Youth work roundup: Football partnership, youth group expansion and The Durrells

Young people get the chance to play football and gain qualifications; The Church Lads' and Church Girls' Brigade membership base increases by 50 per cent; and a star from ITV's The Durrells looks to inspire a new environmentally minded generation, all in the news this week.

Education and employability charity Rathbone Training and Manchester International Football Academy (MIFA) have launched a new partnership offering young people the chance to develop their football skills while gaining qualifications. The free course will give young people aged 16 to 18 the chance to gain maths and English qualifications as well as employability and life skills while playing football for five days a week.?


A uniformed youth group for young people aged five to 21 has grown its membership base by 50 per cent in two years. Youth United’s Uniformed Youth Social Action Fund has also helped The Church Lads’ and Church Girls’ Brigade to grow its number of leaders and volunteers by 65 per cent.?


?A 13-year-old actor from ITV’s The Durrells has admitted fearing that children his age are more interested in Xboxes than the plight of endangered species. The Mirror reports Milo Parker, who plays Gerald Durrell, said he wanted to inspire a new environmentally minded generation as he was named ambassador for the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust.?


A group of students from Sunderland have set up their own discussion and creative group to tackle stress. The Sunderland Echo reports Underground Neighbourhood has been established by pupils from St Aidan’s and St Anthony’s School and will help young people address issues that affect them with their peers.?

Youth charity Onside has been given a £25,000 donation from Manchester-based business Carfinance247. The funding will be used to grow the charity’s ambassador groups known as Game Changers, who serve as the figureheads of OnSide future youth zones.?
