Youth groups' community work celebrated at the Philip Lawrence awards

1 min read Youth Work
A group of young people tackling racism in Slough and a youth film project examining the Northern Ireland conflict were among the nine recipients of the 2010 Philip Lawrence Awards.

The annual awards, organised by Catch22, which celebrate young people who undertake work to help local communities, were set up in memory of murdered head teacher Philip Lawrence.

Out of more than 200 nominations from across the UK nine groups succeeded in winning over the judges, which included former winners of the awards.

Frances Lawrence, widow of Philip Lawrence and founder of the awards, said: "This year’s award winners are a credit to their families and local communities – a real inspiration to other young people across the country. Each group has taken positive action to tackle problems faced by members of their communities. We should all be as determined as they are to take positive steps to improve our communities."
