Youth club reconsiders security after petrol bomb

1 min read Youth Work
A Northern Ireland youth club is considering putting cages across its windows for the first time in its 37-year history following a petrol bomb attack.

The Cathedral Youth Club, on the Fountain estate, Londonderry, was targeted by arsonists earlier this week.

The attack involved four petrol bombs that caused damage to the outside of the building.

The Fountain estate is a largely Protestant part of Londonderry and the attack is believed to have been sectarian, according to club leader Jeanette Warke.

She said that although the club has been subjected to minor sectarian attacks in the past this is the first time petrol bombs have been thrown.

Warke added: "There have been incidents before but nothing like this. Because the intention was to start a fire rather than just cause damage it becomes much more serious.

"We have to consider the safety of the building and that is why reluctantly we are considering taking extra precautions.

"You would think that in 2010 that something like this would not be happening."
