A Book Trust and University of Leicester initiative that gives free educational support materials to children in foster care has helped improve maths scores among four out of 10 children taking part. Around 1,500 children have received parcels through the initiative, which is called Letterbox.

Parents are to be surveyed next month on their attitudes to immunisationof young children. The Department of Health has commissioned theresearch among parents and carers of children under the age ofthree.

Only one in 10 projects funded through the government's NeighbourhoodLearning in Deprived Communities scheme have become permanentlyestablished. A report found they achieved short-term success but neededlonger-term funding. Groups targeted for the scheme include lone parentsand young offenders.
