Social exclusion: Blair invites sector leaders to meeting to formulate policy

Tony Blair has invited key players in the children's sector to his country retreat to formulate new policies to tackle social exclusion.

The meeting with the Prime Minister at Chequers was due to take placeyesterday (29 August), as the Government prepares to publish a majoraction plan on social exclusion next month.

A senior source in the children's sector said: "Blair is meeting anumber of key players in the sector to discuss the pressing issuesaround social exclusion, the new challenges coming up and the new boldtactics that Government might introduce to challenge those bits thatseem to have been moving too slowly such as teenage pregnancy,looked-after children and mental health issues."

Invitations to Chequers are relatively rare and are seen as a mark offavour. The source said it was encouraging that the children's sectorwas being represented, but added: "It's slightly nerve-wracking becausenobody knows quite what conclusions the Prime Minister will draw."
