Children in care and care leavers in the area will be offered access to Virtual Memory Box, which has been launched following a pilot between nearby South Tyneside Council and North East based software firm Nebula Labs.

Other local authorities to offer the cloud-based memory storage scheme to young people include Blackpool, and Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council.

The digital service aims to help children with experience of care better reflect and understand their life story, said North Tyneside Council.

A study carried out by South Tyneside Council found that the scheme could help tackle challenges faced by children when items are misplaced, damaged or stolen when they move placements.
