
The project, supported by £3.3m Department for Education funding, is a partnership between 12 local authorities from across the region and aims to reduce the misconceptions around the eligibility of foster carers.
This comes after figures show that there are more than 6,000 children in care in the North East but only 1,500 approved foster carers available.
New research reveals that 64 per cent of people in the North East would foster but haven’t due to misconceptions around eligibility.
The support hub, led by Sunderland City Council’s children’s services provider Together for Children, will offer guidance for prospective foster carers, including through a buddy mentoring scheme linking people considering fostering with experienced carers.
