
It joins six other local authorities, including Manchester City Council, which have made the move this year.
As a protected characteristic future council policies will have to demonstrate that the needs of looked-after children and care leavers are considered through its equality impact assessments.
The motion, which was proposed by Wigan Labour councillor Jenny Bullen and carried at a full council meeting on 7 December, states that the move “will make sure that all our decisions have to take into account the needs and impact on all those who are care experienced”.
Wigan’s decision follows a campaign by care leaver Terry Galloway to give people with care experience protected status in decision making.
