The free sessions, called Carnegie Clubs, are aimed at children under 11 and their parents and will start on 11 October, lasting for three months, with a three-month follow up programme. The PCT-funded programme is being delivered by Carnegie Weight Management.
Currently around one in three children in the UK are overweight or obese. This is reflected in North Tyneside where provisional data from this year's annual height and weight measurements of children shows around 21 per cent of children in year 6 are obese and 36 per cent are either overweight or obese.
Wendy Burke, public health specialist and the childhood obesity lead for North Tyneside PCT, welcomed the programme. "Without help, overweight children will become overweight or obese adults. Overweight children and teenagers have an increased risk of heart attacks, high blood pressure, diabetes and strokes as adults," she said.
Norma Redfearn, North Tyneside council cabinet member for children, young people and learning, said: "By providing early intervention through this scheme we can help give our young people the best possible start in life they deserve."
